Female Hair Loss and Hormones: Is There a Link?

Hair loss in females can be alarming, and it can be caused by a variety of stresses, including infections, physical or mental stress, and even genetics. However, research has also shown that hormones can play a prominent role in determining the extent and sometimes even the start or end of female baldness. Many different hormones play many different roles in the human body, and it turns out that hormonal imbalances can actually lead to hair loss, among other disorders and discomforts.

Hormonal problems can occur if there is a problem with the female’s thyroid gland. Hormonal imbalances in this case may occur if the thyroid glad is overly active or under active. Another possible source of hormonal imbalance may be in the reproductive organs: if there are imbalances in the estrogen levels of women, then they may experience baldness. Imbalances in estrogen levels may occur when a woman is pregnant, or if she has an inborn disease that makes her susceptible to low or high production of estrogen in the body.

Hormonal problems are not difficult to cure: by taking hormone therapy, people with thyroid gland problems and reproductive system problems may find that their hair will grow back soon enough. Pregnant women may be distressed to find their hair falling out after pregnancy, but this is normal, and the hair will grow back in a few months after the baby is born.

If you suspect that your hair loss problem is due to hormonal changes, talk to your doctor. You may be ordered to undergo a few blood tests in order to check the levels of hormones in your body, and in order for the doctor to make a comprehensive and accurate diagnosis of your hair loss situation.
